Relay Jeff Bezos's Advice to Software Side Hustlers: “Focus on things in your business that won’t change.”
Side hustlers and solopreneurs: With constrained time and resources, it’s essential to invest your efforts wisely.
In an interview (2023–12), Jason said a piece of good advice he and DHH got from Jeff Bezos (Amazon Boss, former world’s richest person):
“Focus on things in your business that won’t change.” — Jeff Bezos
Jason Fried and DHH took that quite seriously. Otherwise, they won’t remember (let alone mention) this advice 10+ years later.
The audience of this article is Software Side Hustlers who are building (or about to) their own apps, and hopefully, one day, they can live on that, i.e. not working for others.
I relay Jeff Bezos’ advice in a more specific context: “What kind of apps or domains should a software side hustler devote to?”
Doing well in a software job (for others) can be uneasy. Doing side work in my spare time for a long period surely will be hard. Therefore, you do need to make a wise decision.
